April 30, Basecamp: Byron reports "the winds today we about 70 knots at about 24,000 feet [7,315 m] ... tomorrow they're supposed to go down to about 50 knots at about 24,000 feet, the day after 15 knots and the day after that 15 knots as well."

April 24, Basecamp: Byron reports "we're in a little bit of weather here. It snowed overnight, about three or four inches and all of our Sherpas actually had to come down from Camp II because of the weather that has been performing up in the Western Cwm here."

April 21, Camp III: Byron reports "right now we've got some high winds happening around our tent."

April 20, Camp II: Byron reports "the temperatures today were very good -- 34 degrees. The weather came in a little bit, early in the afternoon, dropped some snow on us but now it's clearing off a little and it's a little even sunny."

April 19, Camp II: Byron reports "about 45 minutes ago we were completely shrouded in cloud and now it's sunny and warm"

April 18, Western Cwm: Byron reports "the temperature in the Western Cwm today was about 33 degrees Celsius ... in the altitudes where we're at right now the sun is 80 per cent more intense so you have to use lots of sunscreen."

April 10, Basecamp: Byron reports "it's overcast ... just hovering above zero with very, very light winds." He says "we had a dusting of snow last night and it was actually quite cold, down to about minus 15 Celcius."

April 7, Camp I: Byron reports "the sun is shining, the winds are really whistling around and the temperature is about -5 to -10" degrees Celcius.

Everest 2000 Education: Weather

Because of Everest's great height, instead of watching the sky, climbers keep an eye below for clouds moving up the mountain.

From the time they reached Basecamp, Byron and the rest of the Everest 2000 team were constantly checking weather conditions. Dr. Dave Irvine-Halliday installed a permanent weather monitoring station at team headquarters and Dr. Virginia Robinson tabulated the information, sending it back daily to the website.

The computerized system recorded temperature, barometric pressure, humidity and wind speed and direction. It was on loan from the Vulcan Tourism and Trek Station.

The team is grateful to the Vulcan Tourism and Trek Station for the loan of the weather monitoring equipment.
