Phase 2

Developed by: Science Alberta Foundation
Take the next step: Adventure Everest

The Everest 2000 team spent February and March organizing the Everest 2000 expedition food, clothing and equipment and making final preparations to depart for Nepal.

The Phase 2 Education Activities reflect these preparations.

Student activities focus on equipment design, clothing requirements and nutrition needs that will keep the climbers warm and healthy so they can successfully reach the summit. Student activities related to the Nepal Light Project also continue, with more hands-on challenges and experiments.

The activities for this phase are listed below.

Telecollaborative Project - Getting To Know You:
Students from Div I - IV will continue to work on the project, Getting to Know You: Part One, as introduced in Phase 1.

Theme 1 - Goal Setting, Decision Making and Problem Solving

Division I - IV Activities:

  • Read Your Way to Everest:
The idea is to encourage students to set goals and meet a challenge to read, as a team, 8,850 pages of books at their individual reading level. The 8,850 pages are equivalent to the height of Mount Everest in metres. This project parallels the Stairway to Everest Challenge, a physical challenge found in the Energy and the Human Body theme. Students will be invited to post their results on the Everest 2000 Submissions and Results page.

Participants in both projects will be invited to learn about Nepalese culture by planning celebrations and ceremonies as Byron summits Mt. Everest in May. The start date for this activity is flexible. It will continue through to Phase 5.

Theme 2 - Energy and the Environment
The following activities relate to magnetism, compasses, directions, electricity, the environment and energy, with connections to the Nepal Light Project, and issues of Nepalese culture and way of life. Division I activities, in particular, relate to the Everest 2000 expedition as the children consider, for example, how the team can find their way when there is low visibility on the mountain. The activities for Division II (grades 4-6) focus on batteries and generating electrical current. They are prerequisite activities for the challenge in Phase 3. Students in Division III and IV will concentrate on the development of a light source for mountain climbing -- a headlamp. These are prerequisite activities for the challenge in Phase 3.

Please see the Energy and the Environment Background Information for more details on th electrical concepts presented in this phase. The electrical concepts behind the Nepal Light Project are also explained in this section.

Division I Activities:

  • Going in Circles
  • Just Go North!
  • Follow the Leader
  • Following a Simple Map
Division II Activities: (leading to a challenge in Phase 3)
  • Lemon Battery
  • Electroplating
  • Planting Batteries
Division III and IV Activities: (leading to a challenge in Phase 3)
  • Building a Circuit to Power a Headlamp
  • Designing a Unique Switch
  • Creating an Adjustable Beam of Light

Theme 3 - Energy and the Human Body

The human body can to some extent adapt to conditions experienced at high altitude. The activities and investigations in this phase introduce students to the energy requirements of the human body.

Food energy is a key to protecting mountain climbers from cold injuries including hypothermia. As the team is preparing for their departure for Nepal, engage your students in these activities to help them gain awareness of the ways that the Everest team will protect and maintain their health throughout this physically demanding expedition.

Please note: The Training for Everest activity was introduced in Phase 1, but you may participate in this activity any time.

Division I Activities:

  • Measuring the Water Content of Food
  • Challenge: Construct a Tent
  • Training for Everest - continued from Phase 1
Division II Activities:
  • Body Temperature and Exercise
  • Challenge: Construct a Tent
  • Training for Everest - continued from Phase 1 and related to Stairway to Everest project in Phase 3
Division III Activities:
  • Food and Energy
  • Challenge: Construct a Tent
  • Training for Everest - continued from Phase 1 and related to Stairway to Everest project in Phase 3
Division IV Activities:
  • Cellular Respiration and Carbon Dioxide
  • Challenge: Construct a Tent
  • Training for Everest - continued from Phase 1 and related to Stairway to Everest project in Phase 3
